MOTHER TONGUE

and the Parting of Lips

A beloved collection of poems by Umaa

THE COILED ONE

I confuse the confused

Anger the angry

Poison the addicted

My coils rest heavy

At the bottom

Of your toxic body

I am the trap door

And the key

Turn me and I'll shatter your delusions

Straighten me and I'll penetrate your fears

I am here to churn the remembering

To spurn the forgetting

Coiled up you can slide my spiral

Into your dumbed-down demise

Straight up, I'll break the code and rise

Unfurling the shining fibers of your awakening

Raise up out of the vault my forked tongue

Supernatural-voiced I proclaim

Unity in all difference
